What To Do When Someone Dies
A simple, calm guide for when you need it most. When someone dies, it can feel overwhelming and difficult to know what to do next. I am here to guide you gently through each step. You can contact me at any time for support or advice.
When someone dies at home
If the death was expected:
Contact the GP or the out‑of‑hours doctor
A doctor or qualified nurse will attend to verify the death
Once verification has taken place, you can contact me and I will bring your loved one into my care
If the death was unexpected:
Call 999
The emergency services will advise you on the next steps
The Coroner may become involved
When someone dies in hospital or a care home
The staff will take care of the initial steps:
A doctor will verify the death
The medical certificate of cause of death will usually be issued by the hospital or GP
Once you are ready, contact me and I will make the necessary arrangements to bring your loved one into my care
When the Coroner is involved
The Coroner may be notified if:
The death was sudden or unexpected
The cause of death is unclear
The person had not seen a doctor recently
The death was the result of an accident or injury
The Coroner’s office will keep you informed. You can still contact me at any time — I will guide you through the process and liaise with the Coroner on your behalf.
Registering the death
A death must be registered within 5 days (in England and Wales).
You will usually need:
- The medical certificate of cause of death
- The person’s full name, address and date of birth
- Their occupation (if applicable)
- Details of their spouse or civil partner
- Their NHS number (if known)
- The registrar will issue:
- The death certificate
- A green form (certificate for burial or cremation), which I will need to proceed with the funeral arrangements
If the Coroner is involved, the process may differ — I will explain everything clearly.
